![]() ![]() I wish Tor.com or literally anyone in the funky-yet-mainstream speculative fiction space had picked this up, because that would have been a better home for it. ![]() We're past the historical moment (aka until like 2015) when all genre fiction had to be YA or face immediate oblivion. I could see this book getting traction among adult sci-fi audiences and I hope it finds those folks, but it has no relationship to YA except for the fact that the protagonists are, for no real reason, 17. This is a twisty survival drama, a harrowing story about life and death and the meaning of humanity, and it is to its detriment that it was sold as YA. I'm not going to talk too much about the plot because it's worth reading with as little upfront info as possible, but believe me when I say the romance is basically the least important aspect of this book. Based on the cover and the description, I assumed this was going to be some kind of YA finnpoe/stucky ripoff space romance. ![]()

It’s that feeling that has made me go back to her books occasionally, so I decided I’d pick up Born to be Wilde, the third book in her Wildes of Lindow Castle series, just to see if maybe I’d got it wrong and she would wow me again. But… this is Eloisa James, right? One of the biggest names in historical romance. There are plenty of other books out there to read, so no big loss. You get the feeling that Sturgeon has sat on this one for quite a while, and thought about this from every angle. This sounds negative, but it isn’t! I think this may be due to Sturgeon’s sparse, efficient style and not at all the author trying to skim over something he hasn’t fully thought out. When another character says “wait that doesn’t make any sense”, the first says “of course it doesn’t!” and the narrative powers on. For some reason I can’t explain, Sturgeon’s world works incredibly effectively even when logical leaps are made that I just can’t make. The introduction of carnies will tend to do that. Theodore Sturgeon builds a word that has one foot in the mundane and one in the unusual. Just aliens that aren’t intednding to impact humanity at all. There’s no robots, no space travel (except implied), no aliens trying to take over (intentionally). The way this book unfolds is so subtly scifi and I love it. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Truths you will not want to see," replied Sejanus, "and answers you will not want to hear." "What lies beyond that door?" asked Horus, backing away from the silver portal. Interestingly, I think the best quote to sum up the qualities of the second book of the Horus Heresy is this: Warning don't read that part before meal. Again there are some well written fights and I especially liked how adequately disgusting are descriptions of Nurgle's (God of death, decay and disease) forces. We finally get to learn more about gods of chaos, emperor and see how deep corruption has spread through Imperium. Horus rising was more of prolog while this book deals with events that lead to Horus becoming aligned with Chaos and starts setting the stage for the main events and great civil war to follow. On the other hand story in this book is at much more interesting place. ![]() So far I got the impression that Abnett is better writer than McNeil, his dialogs and characters where more enjoyable.
